
Multi-aperture VCSELs have an advantage of ~0.1nm spectral width (RMS), ~30GHz modulation bandwidth and a high output power at low series resistance. This design allows reducing the effect of chromatic dispersion in the glass fiber, which is presently limiting the transmission distance of the state-of-the-art 100G short-reach multimode fiber (MMF) interconnects to 100m. Narrow far field is important for applying the VCSELs to multimode on-board polymer waveguides, while preventing excitation of high order modes, which strongly limit the on-board transmission distance.
