VI Systems GmbH and Enplas Corporation Announce Breakthrough in Multi-Mode Fiber Technology for Enhanced AI and Cloud Computing Interconnects

Berlin, Germany & Saitama, Japan, June 13, 2024— The rapid expansion of cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) is driving the need for advanced short-reach interconnect solutions that are both cost-effective and energy-efficient. In line with the Ethernet standard IEEE 802.3db, current 400G SR4 and 800G SR8 transceivers utilizing multi-mode (MM) VCSELs can achieve transmission reaches of up to 100 meters over Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF).

To ensure that 100-meter Multi-Mode Fiber transmission reach is also achievable with the next-generation 200G/lane VCSEL technology, it is crucial to reduce the spectral width of the VCSEL emission, as was demonstrated with VCSEL modules provided by VI Systems. This reduction mitigates the effects of chromatic dispersion in the fiber, a critical factor for maintaining transmission integrity over longer distances.

In a strategic partnership, VI Systems GmbH (Germany) and Enplas Corporation (Japan) have conducted a comprehensive study on the transmission properties of multi-mode fiber combined with Multi-Aperture Single-Mode VCSELs and a novel ultra-compact high-NA optimized light turning connector. The collaborative research has yielded significant results. The transmission distance at 53 Gbaud (or 106Gbit/s PAM-4) been extended by 2-4 times as compared to conventional Multi-Mode VCSELs going presently beyond 200m of worst case OM4 fiber. Furthermore, the studies demonstrate that with typical lens misalignment found in mass production, the encircled flux conditions, the coupling efficiency, and the data transmission quality are all maintained.

This pioneering study shows that strong industrial innovation is the driving force that will enable sustainable growth of the interconnect technology, essential for the artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure.

The findings from this research will be jointly presented by VI Systems GmbH and Enplas Corporation at the ECOC Exhibition in Frankfurt, from September 23-25, 2024. This presentation will highlight the technological advancements and potential for future applications in high-speed data transmission.
