VI Systems to report on novel multi-aperture VCSELs with a narrow spectral width for Extended Reach 800G Ethernet over multimode fiber and on record energy-efficient VCSEL-based links.

===== Press release 12.12.2022 =====

At OFC 2023 VI Systems GmbH (VIS) will present two breakthrough results important for short-reach optical communication.

VIS presents a new multi-aperture VCSEL chip with a narrow spectral width suitable for extended reach (up to 800m) multimode fiber communication at 100G: "Multi Aperture High Power 100G Single Mode 850nm VCSEL for Extended Reach 800G Ethernet" (L. Chorchos, M4C.8, 2023). The work is performed in cooperation with the group of Prof. Turkiewicz at the Technical University of Warsaw.

Multi-aperture VCSELs have an advantage of ~0.1nm spectral width (RMS), ~30GHz modulation bandwidth and a high output power at low series resistance. This design allows reducing the effect of chromatic dispersion in the glass fiber, which is presently limiting the transmission distance of the state-of-the-art 100G short-reach multimode fiber (MMF) interconnects to 100m. Improved MMF-coupling tolerances are observed. Narrow far field is important for applying the VCSELs to multimode on-board polymer waveguides, while preventing excitation of high order modes, which strongly limit the on-board transmission distance.

Together with the group of Prof. Gerfers at the Technical University of Berlin, a VIS VCSEL-based transmitter operating at a record energy efficiency 0.4 pJ/bit will be reported: "A 0.4 pJ/bit NRZ Voltage Mode VCSEL Driver for up to 224 Gbit/s SWDM Links" (U. Hecht, M4E.1, 2023). Energy efficiency is a key parameter for cloud computing and AI-related applications.

VI Systems has high expectations on further increasing role of VCSEL-based communication in 2023 and beyond.
